Residents of nearly one hundred Southern Illinois communities including Mt. Vernon, Marion, Nashville, West Frankfort, Murphysboro, Lawrenceville, Sparta, Du Quoin and others will begin receiving letters from Homefield Energy confirming their enrollment in the new rates.  Collinsville based, Homefield Energy, was the winning bidder with a rate of 4.391 cents per kwh.  The new rate will be effective with December meter readings and is a stable, fixed rate through June, 2022.  This rate represents the lowest rate negotiated since the initial aggregation rate and terms took effect in 2013.

In 2012/2013, residents throughout Southern Illinois voted overwhelmingly to participate in bulk negotiated electricity rates, administered by their City or Village and managed by the Southern Illinois Aggregation Partnership (SIAP).  Participants in the aggregation rates are automatically enrolled unless they choose to opt-out, without penalty.  There is also no additional fee to participate.  The letters currently hitting mailboxes detail how to opt-out.  For those wishing to continue participation, nothing is required to do so.  The letters are a confirmation of the enrollment in the new rates.  A follow-up letter from Ameren will be additional confirmation of the program.

“We’ve seen substantial changes in the construct of the Illinois energy market in Southern Illinois.  Coal power plant shutdowns, Future Energy Jobs Act Act (FEJA) and energy usage trends have all had an impact on competitive electric rates.  Since the inception of electric aggregation rate negotiations, savings has been substantial” said Jeff Haarmann, Partner in the Southern Illinois Aggregation Partnership.  “These new rates mirror the drop in the current wholesale market and we believe position our Southern Illinois communities to continue to see savings over the upcoming years.”
